Castelli is a brand that has recently been vocal about its shift away from PFAS. In an interview with Escape, brand manager Steve Smith admitted that for many years little was known about the harmfulness of the chemicals, although they've been linked to various health risks as early as the 1960s.
“Back in the early 2000s up until 2012, we didn't quite realise some of what we were doing with this powerful DWR that was making everything waterproof. It was easy to keep people dry and we had some real resonance with that,” Smith says. “I mean, to be honest, there wasn't as much awareness around what this stuff really does – or not as much panic around what it does either. So today, we're probably panicking – maybe rightly or wrongly.”
