Bikes on car on VR Autojuna

Hello, I hope you don't mind if I post a question in English, my Finnish is terrible thus far! I've used the VR autojuna to Lapland many times, but never with bikes on the car. This Friday I'm travelling Pasila-Kolari with my car & 2 adult & 2 kid's bikes. According to their rules, you can't take bikes on the roof of the car. But I was wondering, what if I use a rear clip on rack? (like https://www.thule.com/en-gb/gb/bike-...unk-bike-racks). Providing I keep to the max 204cm height and 505cm length of the car specified by VR, would they be likely to accept it? (it's going in one of the newer covered wagons). Any personal experiences? I did think to call VR, but I suspect they will refer to the prohibition of bikes on the roof outright. I otherwise have to try to fit the bikes inside the car for the train journey which is not so easy with this many bikes. Any advice much appreciated!

Probably best to check with VR.

If all comes to the worst, it's always possible to have the bikes transported in the cargo carriage of the train. But this would come with a surcharge of 5€ per bike each way.

Sorry my rallyenglish. I'm sure that Your finnish is better than my english.

You cant use rear rack. I have check that VR. I dont know why they have that rules.

You have to put bikes inside car. If You have stationwagon, at least 2-3 bikes should be possible. I have used that system couple of times with 3 bikes.

I dont know if its possible to take one or two bike inside train. There is department for freight. You can ask if You can use that. Or kidsbike to cabin.

Since there is a cargo cabin it'll likely be of no issue to take all the 4 bikes there. That'll increase the hassle at both ends a little but that's a small inconvenience when you compare that to not having your bikes with you.

Many thanks to all for the answers, really helpful. I will try this evening to fit all the bikes inside the car. It's a bit more hassle to take them in the cargo carriage on the train when travelling with kids; I tried it once before and it was troublesome trying to supervise the bicycles and the kids! Perhaps I have to book a slot for one bike though, not sure all 4 will fit inside the car. Seems a bit silly of VR since with the newer closed car carriages I can't really see how rear bike racks are a problem providing they stay within the specified space dimensions. Especially since they allow skis, kayaks and the rest to be carried. Maybe I write them a letter on that when I have time......but thanks to you all for the great advice for now!

You can also leave your car to VR, they will drive it to train (there is same kind of fee, for sure). This would leave one adult for kids and another could take care of the bikes.

We have done two trips to Europe with normal sedan, two bikes inside a ski box, one in the trunk. Because cheaper on ferries and faster on Autobahn (max speed about 180 km/h) compared to bikes normally on the roof. And bikes on the rear rack gets very dirty when raining.
Just returned from this years Europe trip, but this time with a wagon, and all three bikes in the trunk. Now no speed limit on Autobahn (max was about 230 km/h).

This. Just this week I wroted to VR, now waiting for reply. People should demand modernising these old rules, orherwise nothing changes..
